The Tragic Fate of Bradley Manning

Though he's been thouroughly overshadowed by Julian Assange in the coverage of the unfolding wikileaks debacle, it is important to remember that a young private named Bradley Manning is the guy who got the ball rolling on all of this, downloading confidential information under the guise of listening to Lady Gaga and then giving it to wikileaks. But while we know what Assange is up to (hello show trial, hello bail), have any of you heard about Bradley Manning lately? No? Well that may be because, like something out of a political horror film, Bradley Manning has been spirited away and is being held in solitary confinement by the government without a conviction or formal trial.
Glenn Greenwald has an excellent post over at Salon describing the Orwellian conditions that Manning is currently being held in:
From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. For 23 out of 24 hours every day -- for seven straight months and counting -- he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he's being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch).
This is morally reprehensible. Despite whether or not you think Bradley Manning is a treasonous villain, the fact that our own Government is holding him, and American citizen, in conditions resembling something out of a dystopic melodrama is completely inexcusable. Even Jeffery Dahmer got his day in court, and he raped people then drilled holes in their skulls and poured acid inside.
Charge Bradley Manning with something or let him go. And at least take him out of excessively cruel solitary confinement and give him a pillow!
